No matter whether children are raised in a rural village or a large city, life in a poor family always means unending struggle to survive. Six hundred million, slightly more than half of India’s population is rural and village life can mean living in a modest single-room concrete building or a palm leaf thatch hut. See more.

Sometimes people ask us why we don’t restrict our assistance to children in America. We recognize there is great need in our own country and we salute those organizations who work tirelessly to help the needy here at home. They do important work.

 

But the living conditions and lack of protection for children in many developing areas of the world is just unthinkable and there are no safety nets in those places to catch them. To give you some idea of the kinds of backgrounds many of the children in our orphanages come from, we offer this photo journey of  life in India, where we support 54 orphanages.
